Me, Myself

EMAC – CONTRAST

This video shows that I took some situations.

My Life in Fiction – Kianga Ford

Currently, ’My Life in Fiction – Kianga Ford’ exhibits in the Contemporary Museum in Baltimore. Last Wednesday, I saw the exhibition with my classmates. Among the four projects, ‘The story of this place’ was impressed to me. There are several big rounded air-beds with headphones in a big room of the museum. People can lay down on the beds and listen to music and narration from the headphones. Each air beds mean different places that Kianga Ford had ever been to, such as LA, MIAMI, and Norway, etc. Kianga Ford peacefully narrates her feeling and explanation about the places. When I laid down on the bed, I almost fell asleep.

The one of the four projects, ‘Brasilia’ was also really intense. It slowly shows Ford and her sisters’s physical appearance. In the movie,  Ford and her sisters and their children gather, talk, and eat some fruits together in the exotic garden. A camera often shows tropical fruits which are cut two equal parts, and then shows the knife that is cutting the fruits. And then the camera move the lens to the women’s children. I’m not sure, but I guess the ovaries of fruits symblize vagina, and the knife means penis. The exotic garden and tropical colors stand for fertility. The film was composed of Ford, her own music, and no narration or voice, but has many stories on it.

Assignment #5 (MÖbius strip)

The most important issue to me is ‘economic problem’.

The foreign exchange rate is raising up everyday.

I will pay for my next tuition fee almost 30% more than this semester.

Rene Magritte

Rene Magritte’ Artworks has changed my notion to artwork. His works are visually very clear and simple, but have complex idea. Magritte did fully dynamic meta-description artworks. Moreover since Magritte is described in itself, it influences and makes me to think how to express myself in artworks.

A work that has made me rethink the nature of art…

A work that has made me rethink the Art is a film, ‘The Shining (1980)’. The director of the movie is Stanley Kubrick, and an actor is Jack Nicholson. Jack Nicholson was really well acted in the movie. During the movie, I could not turn away my eyes from the movie. The most interest thing is that the movie has diverse double meanings, so I should think and solve the meanings.

For example, the Hotel’s name, Overlook, which is Jack’s family is living during winter time has a double meaning. The meaning of ‘Overlook’ is literally to see something wrong or bad but, decide to ignore it. It implies what Jack did, and what will be happened to Jack’s family. This movie also displays a lot of objects that have double meanings such as some Indian patterns, and an African-American cook…etc. The ‘Overlook hotel’ was built on the area which was the area of native indian. But, the native indian was taken away from white american in early 1900s. In the last scene, there are some pictures on the wall. Among them, a picture shows the Jack’s figure at the party of July 4. Why did he stand up middle of the crowd of white american and what’s the meaning?

Stanley Kubric knew the way to make people to rethink and surmise about his movies, and because of the movie, I got a habit to think about double meanings when I see some artworks.

I still memorize a sentence that was showed in this movie.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
All assignment and no play makes Sui a dull girl. :-(

Dresses for different events (2008)

“Dresses for different events (2008)”

Mina Cheon
-Archival digital print, paper and frame

I was really impressed when I saw Mina Cheon’s Artwork in The Decker Gallery at MICA.
She digitally printed and then framed some vintage Korea paper doll’s clothes.

Her Art works inspired me and made me feel nostalgic for my childhood because most Korea women play with these kind of dolls when they are children.

When I was young, I brought some Korean paper dolls at the small stationary store in my village in Korea.
One paper doll was just 10 cents, and a good toy for kids who easily lost interest in the toys they have.
The paper dolls had with 6~7 dresses stamped onto one hard paper, and I needed to cut the dolls and dresses by following the silhouettes of each figure.
I could change the dolls clothes for different events that I set up such as a party or work…etc.
As a young girl, It was my big pleasure, and I always played with these dolls.

The Most interest thing to me now is that most of the paper dolls were almost blond, with big and blue or green eyes, and skinny body even though most of the dolls were made in Korea.
I guess most Korea kids might have admired those kinds of appearances or exotic mood in those days perhaps because it was rare to see foreigners in Korea, so Korean kids had a fantasy about the different aspects of the female form.

At that time, all of the dresses wear so beautiful to me, however,
I really surprised how it was unfashionable and so weird!!!!

Everything I remember is beautiful in my memory only.

Where am I? (Fake Photo)

When I was young, I’d ever imagined to see my parent’s wedding.

My parents got married in 1975, and then I was born in 1977.

So, it is impossible to see my parent’s wedding actually.

But, I can imagine, and I can make a fake picture that I’m attending in their wedding. :-)

What an amazing!

(Unfortunately, this is not my parent’s picture, just I borrowed someone’s on internet. :-( )
